I Can’t Believe It’s Been a Little Less Than a Year

This was my second time seeing a StarKid project live, though I have watched majority of their other projects, and it was a fantastic night.

StarKid is a theatre company that first started as a group at The University of Michigan posting their parody Harry Potter musical online and gaining online success. Since then they have produced 30 projects, a combination of original musicals, plays, concerts, and other formats, gaining global success. "I Can't Believe its been a little less that a Year" is their second London concert, performing a selection of songs from their anthology while wearing matching shirts.

What I liked

I loved the original song for this concert, aptly titled "I Can't Believe It's Been a Little Less Than A Year". It was a very catchy tune and I appreciated the premise of the concert being the StarKid members auditioning for British citizenship given the current US political climate. The set list as a whole was fantastic, a well-planned mix of recent shows and earlier projects, only stumping me once as to knowing where they were from!

I think my favourite performances were from AJ Holmes, a member of StarKid who has not been in an on-stage cast since 2013 but is a trained musical theatre performer who has even been on Broadway! Holmes has an incredible voice and his renditions of "Listen to you Heart", "Happy Ending", "If I Believed", and "Gilderoy!" were gems sprinkled throughout the evening and undeniable highlights.

What wasn't my favourite

As a person who more commonly attends musicals than concerts, I am not the biggest fan of audience singing along at a volume that makes it harder to hear the performers. Similarly, I do not enjoy heckles, even when they are positive. That being said, this is the type of concert where it is not frowned upon by the performers so I say this with a grain of salt, that there were some moments of personal frustration with my fellow audience members where I felt distracted from the performance.

Overall

StarKid is an amazing company, and I loved seeing them live. I highly recommended to anyone who hasn’t encountered StarKid before to check out their recent musicals on YouTube, namely their most recent production Cinderella's Castle or Nerdy Prudes Must Die.
