Alan Turing, Joan of Arc, and Vincent Van Gogh Walk into a Bar was a very interesting play which centered a 4th character, a young girl named Rockie who is growing up and curious about what it means to be remembered, specifically as a figure in history. The space reflects a child’s interpretation of a bar, mixing up the memories of movies and looking in through the windows on the street to create a space that you can recognise as a bar but is missing key details. No alcohol, only 1 table, a painted door to a “staff only” area, and plenty of space to run around. One key element I attempted was a stained glass window that would change throughout the show, stage left within a noticeboard, where a light would shine through a pane of one way glass and a cellophane stained-glass-style pane would be revealed for each of the characters key moments. This was technically difficult but came together in performance.
